Soda Stereo's Doble Vida arrives on limited clear vinyl as an Argentine import, the 1988 album where Latin America's biggest rock band took its sound to New York and came back transformed.
Gustavo Cerati, Zeta Bosio and Charly Alberti were already stars across the continent when they enlisted Carlos Alomar, the guitarist behind so much of David Bowie's best work, to produce their fourth studio album. Alomar brought them to New York to record, making it one of the first Latin American rock records cut in the United States, and the city's energy seeps into every groove.
The result is sleeker and funkier than anything they had made before, steeped in soul, R&B and disco. "En la Ciudad de la Furia" is the crown jewel, a brooding, atmospheric anthem that became one of the most celebrated songs in Argentine rock. "En el Borde" even slips in a rap, while "Corazón Delator" and "El Ritmo de Tus Ojos" show off the band's knack for hooks with a dark edge. Session players including saxophonist Lenny Pickett and trumpeter Chris Botti add extra colour.
It closed the band's flamboyant early era and opened the more mature sound that would help define rock en español.
This clear pressing is a striking way to revisit a true landmark.
