Mike Ness perfected punk with a country heart on Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell, back on limited yellow 180 gram vinyl imported from Holland.

Released in 1992 as Social Distortion's fourth studio album, it followed the breakthrough of their 1990 self-titled record and doubled down on the fusion of punk, rockabilly and honky-tonk that began with Prison Bound. Producer Dave Jerden gives the guitars a thick, roaring weight, and the line-up of Ness, Dennis Danell, John Maurer and Christopher Reece plays with streetwise swagger.

"Bad Luck" became the band's highest-charting single, riding a stomping groove and Ness's sneering, sharp-tongued wit. "Cold Feelings" kicks the album off in a hurry, while covers of Jimmy Work's "Making Believe" and Ed Bruce's "King of Fools" wear the band's outlaw country roots proudly.

The influence of Hank Williams and Johnny Cash runs right through these songs, from the lonesome storytelling to the bruised romanticism, but the delivery is pure Orange County punk, all leather and grease. Ness sings like a man who has paid for every single word.

It is the sound of a band finally hitting its stride after many years of hard living, and this bright yellow pressing gives a hard-bitten classic a suitably bold new look on the turntable.
