Fifteen years after Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes, Social Distortion return with Born To Kill, a double LP that finds Mike Ness with plenty left to say and no interest in whispering it.

The gap was not idle. Ness spent part of it beating tonsil cancer, and this is the band's first album since, which gives every snarl extra grit and every tender moment real weight. Social Distortion have always worn their roots openly, from Orange County punk to classic country and rock and roll, and here those threads pull tighter than ever.

Ness co-produced the record with Dave Sardy, and the pair keep it lean and loud: big open chords, a rhythm section that swings rather than stomps, and vocals set at the front where they belong. The title track opens with a defiant charge, while No Way Out and Partners In Crime lean into the outlaw storytelling that built the band's name.

Guest appearances from Benmont Tench of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Lucinda Williams add a rootsy warmth to the mix, and the closing Over You lands with a bittersweet ache that only a band this deep into its story could pull off.

Spread across two records, Born To Kill sounds like a veteran outfit reasserting its place in the punk conversation, scars and all.
