Lindsey Jordan has never sounded more at ease with uncertainty than on Ricochet, the third Snail Mail album and a bright, guitar-heavy return after a gap of more than four years.
Her 2018 debut Lush made her an indie rock name to watch while she was still a teenager, and Valentine pushed into bigger, glossier heartbreak. Ricochet was written largely on tour, with Jordan drafting vocal melodies before settling on the words, and it shows in songs that move with the easy logic of someone humming to herself in the back of a van.
Aron Kobayashi Ritch of the band Momma produced the record, which was tracked partly at Mitch Easter's Fidelitorium studio in North Carolina and partly in Brooklyn. Vintage amplifiers from his own collection help give the guitars a thick, crunchy, sun-faded tone that fits these songs like a worn-in jacket.
Opener "Tractor Beam" has a gravitational pull that lives up to its name, and "Dead End" and "My Maker" carry the biggest hooks, all chiming chords and Jordan's cool, conversational delivery. Lyrically she circles time, smallness and the strange comfort of not having every answer.
It's a grown-up Snail Mail record that keeps the scrappy heart of the early songs, and it sounds terrific turned up on a slow Sunday afternoon.
