Fresh is Sly Stone turning down the riot and turning up the strut, pressed here on 180-gram vinyl.
Released in 1973, two years after the murky There's a Riot Goin' On, it found Sly writing, producing and endlessly reworking the songs at the Record Plant in Sausalito. The band had shifted around him: Andy Newmark took over the drums and Rustee Allen played bass on several tracks, giving the grooves a tighter, more elastic snap. Even the cover is iconic, a Richard Avedon portrait of Sly caught mid-leap.
"If You Want Me to Stay" was the big hit, and it's still one of the coolest singles of the decade, all loping bass and a vocal that sounds half asleep yet completely in control. "In Time" opens the record with a clipped, stuttering rhythm that still sounds futuristic. Then there's "Que Sera, Sera," the Doris Day standard reimagined as a gospel-soul hymn with Rose Stone singing lead, the only cover song on an original Family Stone album. "Frisky" keeps things light on its feet.
Spare, funky and full of space, Fresh rewards repeat listens on a good turntable. It's the sound of a genius working in close-up, and half a century on it still sounds startlingly modern.
