Sleep come down from the mountain with Hempispheres, five songs of colossal riffage that launch a brand-new lineup of the stoner doom pioneers.

Bassist and singer Al Cisneros is joined here by the Melvins' Dale Crover on drums and guitarist Bubba Dupree, the new formation stepping in for Matt Pike and Jason Roeder. It is the band's first album since The Sciences in 2018, released through Third Man Records, and it keeps faith with the things that made Sleep legends in the first place: devotion to Black Sabbath and Tony Iommi, tone you can feel in your chest, and a cosmic sense of humour.

Opener "Have Spacesuit Will Travel" sets the coordinates with a slow, heavy liftoff, before "The Morrisist" tightens things into a shorter, punchier groove. The title track stretches out into a hazy space-rock drift, and "Arrival of the Industry Ships" is the towering centrepiece at over eleven minutes. "Whole Wheat Mountain / Well Baked" closes the set with the kind of wink only this band could get away with.

There are nods to the acid rock and proto-metal of Hawkwind, Deep Purple and Cactus throughout, all filtered through Cisneros's chant-like vocals and a rhythm section that never hurries.

For a band whose every release feels like an event, this is a welcome, weighty return.
