Slash goes back to the source on Orgy of the Damned, a 2024 blues covers album spread across two LPs and stacked with guest singers who clearly showed up to have fun.
The idea traces back to the mid-1990s, when he stepped away from Guns N' Roses and toured with Slash's Blues Ball. Decades later he reunited that band's core, bassist Johnny Griparic, keyboardist Teddy Andreadis and drummer Michael Jerome, and brought in Mike Clink, the producer behind Appetite for Destruction, to capture it all in Los Angeles.
The guest list reads like a dream festival bill. Brian Johnson howls through Howlin' Wolf's Killing Floor with Steven Tyler blowing harmonica, while Chris Stapleton turns Peter Green's Oh Well into a gritty, menacing stomp. Gary Clark Jr. trades licks with Slash on Robert Johnson's Crossroads, and Beth Hart brings slow-burning heat to T-Bone Walker's Stormy Monday. Iggy Pop, Billy Gibbons, Paul Rodgers and Demi Lovato all take a turn at the mic as well.
Through it all, Slash plays with obvious joy, reaching for talk box and pedal steel, and letting the songs breathe rather than burying them in shred. The closing instrumental is entirely his own.
It is a heartfelt salute to the music that shaped his playing, and a loose, rowdy hang best enjoyed loud.
