Few albums sound as fearless as I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got, Sinéad O'Connor's 1990 record of raw nerve and plain-spoken honesty.

Her second album arrived three years after The Lion And The Cobra and turned a cult favourite into a global presence. O'Connor wrote most of it herself and shaped the songs around her own life, from motherhood and a collapsing relationship to the weight of sudden fame and the powers she refused to bow to. It is intimate and confrontational in the same breath.

Her version of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U" is the obvious landmark, a stark string arrangement carrying a voice that seems to crack open in real time. Elsewhere, "The Emperor's New Clothes" is bright, defiant and brilliantly blunt, "I Am Stretched On Your Grave" sets an old Irish poem over a hip-hop drum break, and "Black Boys On Mopeds" is a quiet acoustic indictment of racism and police violence.

The record also leaves room for stillness, closing with unaccompanied singing and spare arrangements that make every breath audible. On vinyl, that closeness feels even more striking.

Decades on, it remains the purest distillation of her voice and convictions, essential listening for anyone drawn to songwriters who refuse to soften the truth.
