Sincere Engineer's Bless My Psyche is a big-hearted punk record that wears its worries on its sleeve, pressed here on purple vinyl.
The Chicago band, fronted by singer and guitarist Deanna Belos, first won fans with the scrappy charm of 2017's Rhombithian on Red Scare. Signing to Hopeless Records for this 2021 follow-up brought a bigger stage, but the songs stayed refreshingly personal, the product of a writing process that stretched over years. The band behind her keeps everything tight and punchy, and the production never smooths over the rough edges that made fans fall for them in the first place.
Belos has a gift for turning everyday dread into shout-along choruses, and her raspy voice sells every self-deprecating line. Opener "Trust Me" sets the tone, while song titles like "Recluse in the Making" and "Dragged Across the Finish Line" tell you plenty about the album's wry, self-aware streak. The closing title track leaves a little room for hope amid the chaos, ending things on a note that feels earned rather than forced.
It is the kind of record that feels like a pep talk from a friend who has been there too, loud, funny and painfully honest. Put it on when your brain needs a break from itself.
