Long before the big choruses of Carnavas, Silversun Pickups introduced themselves with Pikul, a seven-song EP that still crackles with the thrill of a band finding its voice.
Released in 2005 on Dangerbird Records, it grew out of the Silver Lake scene in Los Angeles, where Brian Aubert, Nikki Monninger, Joe Lester and Christopher Guanlao had been honing their swirling, fuzz-heavy sound in local clubs. It offered the first proper glimpse of the dynamics that would carry them onto alternative radio soon after, when the full-length Carnavas followed in 2006.
"Kissing Families" is the calling card, setting Aubert's breathy vocal against Monninger's steady bass and layers of distortion, a hint of the bigger songs to come. "Comeback Kid" and "Booksmart Devil" show off the band's knack for tension and release, and the closing "Sci Fi Lullaby" drifts out on a dreamy, gently unraveling haze.
The debt to early-1990s shoegaze and alternative rock is clear, yet the songs already carry the push and pull that became the band's signature, along with the interplay between Aubert and Monninger's voices.
On vinyl, this compact set is an ideal starting point for fans who want to hear where the story began, rough edges and all.
