Sharon Van Etten's Are We There turns ten with an anniversary pressing on colored vinyl, the 2014 album where her songs of love and damage hit hardest.
After working with Aaron Dessner on Tramp, Van Etten took more control for her fourth album, co-producing it with Stewart Lerman. The result is an emotionally direct record that holds nothing back, a set of songs about the push and pull of a difficult relationship, sung with a candour that can be almost too close to bear.
Afraid of Nothing opens with a slow, quietly defiant build, her voice climbing over piano and spacious drums. Taking Chances adds a darker, insistent pulse, while Your Love Is Killing Me is a raw, devastating centrepiece that lets her voice break wide open. Every Time the Sun Comes Up closes the album with a wry, almost playful shrug after all that intensity.
The arrangements are warm and unhurried, built from piano, organ, guitar and layered harmonies that give her voice room to soar or crack as the song demands.
For anyone who has ever stayed up too late replaying a relationship in their head, this record will feel uncomfortably familiar. Ten years on, it still lands every blow.
