Fondness, Etc. finds Shakey Graves back at home in every sense, a warm, lo-fi fifth album recorded on tape and full of the small, crackling details that make a record feel lived in.

Alejandro Rose-Garcia produced it himself, cutting the songs over one focused month in his home studio on a pair of Tascam tape machines. Committing to tape means accepting a few happy accidents, and that spirit runs all through the record. These songs circle around growing up and getting older, family and fatherhood, and the quiet grief and gratitude of watching time move.

Don't Change a Thing opens in a woozy haze of lo-fi pop, while When the Love Is New pushes forward on a driving beat and some of his most direct alt-rock vocals. The Boilermaker brings power-pop guitars and synths to the regrets of a long night out, and closer No Place to Be strips everything back to folk guitar and voice, a tender song dedicated to his young daughter.

Instrumental detours, a string quartet and even birdsong and wind caught on his porch keep the textures shifting from track to track.

It is a quieter Shakey Graves than the one-man-band firebrand of his early days, and all the more affecting for it. A gentle, generous record that rewards slow evenings and full attention.
