It's a Style Sport finds Shabazz Palaces turning Afrofuturist hip-hop into a tribute to the rap game's old competitive showmanship.
Ishmael Butler, once known as Butterfly in Digable Planets, recorded the 2026 album for Sub Pop over eight days at Hall of Justice in Seattle, bringing in close collaborators to build on song blueprints he had prepared. Longtime collaborator Erik Blood handled production and mixing, and the players include drummer Kassa Overall, saxophonist Carlos Overall, bassist Evan Flory-Barnes and guitarist Thaddeus Turner. It follows 2024's Exotic Birds of Prey.
Lead single "Ahh World (I Won the Alpha Bet)" sets the tone with woozy, hypnotic textures and playful wordplay. "Tongue in Chic" brings a disco lilt, and the closing "From One Future to Another" rides a falsetto-led melody, showing a warmer pop and R&B side alongside the experimental edges.
Lyrically, Butler measures success by character and honor, looks back on his own choices and treats time as something that folds back on itself. It is personal, inventive and full of surprises, rewarding repeat listens as new details emerge.
On colored vinyl, it is a striking new chapter from one of hip-hop's most singular voices, more than three decades after he first turned heads with Digable Planets.
