The soundtrack to Julien Temple's Sex Pistols documentary makes its vinyl debut on this limited red double LP from the UK.
Temple's 2000 film retold the band's short, explosive career from the inside, letting John Lydon, Steve Jones, Paul Cook and Glen Matlock tell their side of the story. The original album was a CD-only affair that mixed the Pistols with songs by other artists, but this vinyl edition keeps the spotlight entirely on the band. The result plays like a rough, thrilling history lesson, with the classic singles sitting beside early covers and rarities.
The big guns are all here. "Anarchy in the UK" still sounds like a brick through a window, "Pretty Vacant" swaggers on its unforgettable riff, and "Holidays in the Sun" marches in on the sound of stomping boots. The deeper cuts are just as much fun: early covers of Jonathan Richman and The Who show the band learning their craft through other people's songs, and their snotty take on the Stooges' "No Fun" closes the set in a blaze of noise.
For a band that burned out so fast, there's a remarkable amount of fire on these two discs. It's a fitting companion to the film and a loud reminder of why punk still matters.
