Bakesale is the 1994 album where Sebadoh's lo-fi restlessness found its sharpest focus, presented here as a deluxe edition.
By the middle of the decade, Lou Barlow had already helped found Dinosaur Jr. and spent years filling tapes with fragile, homespun recordings, while bassist and songwriter Jason Loewenstein brought a scrappier, punkier edge. On Bakesale the two finally sounded like they were pulling in the same direction, trading songs that were tuneful and bruised, and recorded with a clarity the band had rarely bothered with before. The hiss and clatter are still there, but now they frame the melodies rather than bury them.
"License to Confuse" opens the album with a tumbling, anxious energy, while "Skull" is one of Barlow's most perfect songs, a gentle, aching meditation on love and uncertainty. "Rebound" bristles with nervous charm, and "Magnet's Coil" shows just how much melody the band could squeeze out of fuzz and feedback.
Bakesale remains a touchstone of 1990s indie rock and a favorite among fans of heartfelt, rough-edged songwriting. Its mix of confession and noise rubbed off on plenty of bands that followed.
This deluxe edition is a fine way to hear why so many people still keep a copy within arm's reach of the turntable.
