Scientific Dub catches Scientist in 1981, at the start of a run that made the young Jamaican engineer one of dub's most celebrated mixers.
Born Hopeton Brown, Scientist learned the mixing desk as a teenager at King Tubby's studio, where dub's founding father had turned the recording console into an instrument in its own right. By the early 1980s he was taking those lessons further, stripping reggae rhythms down to their bones and rebuilding them with echo, reverb and dramatic drop-outs. His mixes were playful as well as heavy, full of sudden shifts that keep you guessing.
Opener "Drum Song Dub" lets the kit and bass carry the weight, with fragments of melody drifting in and out of the haze. "Keep a Good Dub Rubbing" lives up to its name with a rolling, insistent groove, and "Taxi to Baltimore Dub" turns into a spacious, echo-soaked ride. "Every Dub Shall Scrub" keeps the low end front and centre, with snare cracks ricocheting around the stereo field like stray sparks.
For anyone who loves deep bass and inventive studio craft, this is a rewarding place to start with Scientist's catalogue. Turn it up and give it room: these mixes were built for big speakers and bigger sound systems.
