Scientist sets the controls for deep space on Heavy Metal Dub, a 1982 set of echo-drenched mixes that treats the mixing desk like the bridge of a starship.
By the early 1980s, the young Jamaican engineer had graduated from King Tubby's studio to become one of the most in-demand mixers in Kingston, and his albums of the period came wrapped in gloriously daft concepts, from space invaders and video games to vampires. Here the theme is unmistakably Star Trek, from the Klingons to the Enterprise, though the real adventure happens deep inside the reverb.
Strip a reggae rhythm to its bones and rebuild it in real time: that is the art on display. Conversation With Kahn drops drums and bass in and out of the mix like signals breaking through static, while Party Time on the Enterprise keeps a heavy, rolling groove moving under ricocheting snares and ghostly snatches of melody. Smerf Wak Head Beat is pure mischief, all sudden stops, dropouts and cavernous delay.
This is low-end science of the most rewarding kind. Played loud enough to feel the bass in your chest, it explains exactly why dub's mixing-desk wizards are still treated like rock stars by anyone who has fallen down the rabbit hole of Jamaican sound system culture.
