Madness Reigns from the Gutter (1990) unearths Savatage at full theatrical power, a previously unreleased show spread across three 180 gram LPs in a gatefold jacket.
The concert comes from 1990, when the band were riding the success of Gutter Ballet and touring hard across Europe and North America. It features the classic line-up of Jon Oliva, the late guitarist Criss Oliva, Chris Caffery, Johnny Lee Middleton and Steve "Doc" Wacholz, and the tapes have been restored from the original masters and newly mixed and mastered for this 2026 release.
The set mixes the band's heavy early material with their growing taste for drama. "City Beneath the Surface" kicks things off with raw power, "Of Rage and War" keeps the intensity high, and "Hall of the Mountain King" delivers the menace fans expect. "Gutter Ballet" itself shows the expansive, piano-led ambition that would soon define the band, and "When the Crowds Are Gone" adds a moment of aching reflection.
Criss Oliva's playing is the real treasure here, fluid and fiery, a reminder of what was lost when he died in 1993. For Savatage devotees, this is a long-awaited glimpse of the band at a pivotal peak, captured with all the sweat and spectacle intact.
