More than half a century in the making, The Sea of Emotion is the debut studio album from SatchVai, the partnership of Joe Satriani and Steve Vai, pressed as a 2LP in a gatefold jacket.

The story begins in 1973 on Long Island, when a teenage Vai started taking guitar lessons from Satriani. Both went on to redefine instrumental rock guitar and shared stages on G3 tours, yet a full album together kept slipping down the to-do list. Satriani has said the biggest surprise was discovering how differently the two of them write.

Producer and keyboardist Eric Caudieux helps steer a rotating cast of heavyweight drummers and bassists. Mayhem opens with a blast of twin-guitar fireworks, Bronco Freight Train charges hard down the line, and Glenn Hughes steps up to the microphone for I Wanna Play My Guitar.

The heart of the record is the three-part title suite, which grew from the first pieces written for the project, even weaving in a recording from one of their early lessons, before closing with Reflections On A Year And A Half. It is melodic, searching and deeply personal.

For guitar obsessives, this is the summit meeting they have been daydreaming about for decades.
