More than a decade after Translating the Name made him a post-hardcore cult hero, Anthony Green reunited with Saosin for Along the Shadow.
Released in 2016 on Epitaph, it was the band's first full-length album with Green at the microphone, and this pressing comes with a digital download card. Guitarist Beau Burchell, bassist Chris Sorenson and drummer Alex Rodriguez were waiting, and the reunion produced a record that sounds both familiar and energised. Burchell and Sorenson produced it alongside Will Yip, giving the band's intricate guitar interplay a sleek, modern punch.
From the opening seconds of "The Silver String," Green's high, keening voice cuts through a wall of interlocking riffs and restless drumming. "Racing Toward a Red Light" keeps the pace urgent and tight, and "Count Back from Ten" balances melody with jittery precision. "Old Friends" lands with particular weight on a reunion record, the band locking in behind Green as if no time had passed at all. His melodies climb and crash with the same urgency that made the band's name in the first place.
For fans who wore out those early recordings, this album finally delivered the full-length they had spent years imagining. It is a sharp, satisfying comeback that sounds great turned up loud.
