Santana's third album caught the original Woodstock-era band at full boil, and Santana III returns here on 180-gram vinyl in a gatefold jacket.

Released in 1971, it was the last record by that classic lineup until they reunited for Santana IV decades later. Teenage guitarist Neal Schon had joined Carlos Santana in the front line, and percussionist Coke Escovedo added extra fire to a rhythm section already famous for its intensity. The band produced the album themselves, and it went all the way to number one in the US.

"Batuka" opens with a thunderous percussive surge, and "No One to Depend On", co-written by Escovedo, locks into a hypnotic groove with blistering guitar exchanges. "Everybody's Everything" brings punchy horns and a soulful swagger that turned it into a hit single.

Elsewhere, "Toussaint L'Overture" builds from a slow burn into a feverish instrumental workout, with Gregg Rolie's Hammond organ trading blows with the guitars. Across both sides, Latin percussion and rock muscle meet on equal terms, and Michael Shrieve's drumming holds the whole storm together.

Often considered the peak of the band's early run, it is a thrilling record from start to finish, and heavyweight vinyl gives all that rhythm a solid foundation to stand on.
