Santana's Lotus captures one of the most adventurous bands of the 1970s at full stretch, recorded live in Osaka in 1973 and presented here as a 180-gram triple LP.

By then Carlos Santana had moved well beyond the Latin rock hits that made his name. Drawn towards jazz and spirituality, he led a formidable lineup: keyboardists Tom Coster and Richard Kermode, bassist Doug Rauch, drummer Michael Shrieve, percussionists Armando Peraza and José Chepito Areas, and singer Leon Thomas. Across two nights at the Osaka Kosei Nenkin Kaikan, they played with the freedom of a fusion group and the fire of a street carnival.

Originally issued only in Japan in 1974, the album reached other markets much later, and its elaborate fold-out artwork by Tadanori Yokoo became famous in its own right.

The setlist rides a long, rewarding arc. Every Step of the Way stretches out into dazzling ensemble improvisation, while Oye Como Va arrives as a joyful, percussion-heavy crowd-pleaser. Samba Pa Ti shows Carlos at his most lyrical, his guitar singing over a gentle sway, and Incident at Neshabur fills an entire side with knotty, thrilling interplay between guitar, keys and drums.

Spread across six sides, this is a big, generous live document, the kind of record that rewards an evening set aside purely for listening.
