Eight years of silence ended in 2000 with Sade's Lovers Rock, a hushed, intimate record that proved the band's quiet power had only deepened with time.

By the turn of the millennium, R&B had grown louder and glossier, yet Sade Adu and her longtime bandmates Stuart Matthewman, Andrew Hale and Paul S. Denman went the other way, stripping their sound back to its bare essentials. Produced by the band with longtime collaborator Mike Pela, it became one of their best-loved albums and introduced them to a whole new generation of listeners.

Opening single "By Your Side" remains one of the most tender love songs of its era, a promise of devotion carried by a warm, unhurried groove. "King of Sorrow" moves at a slow, melancholy pace that suits Adu's weary, graceful phrasing, while "Somebody Already Broke My Heart" is a masterclass in restraint. "Immigrant" brings a sharper, socially conscious edge, a reminder that Sade's gentleness has always carried real conviction.

The title nods to the gentle British reggae style of the same name, and that warmth runs right through the record. Acoustic guitars, deep bass and spacious production give everything room to breathe, which makes it a natural fit for a turntable on a slow evening.
