Poised and impossibly smooth, Diamond Life introduced Sade to the world in 1984 and still sounds like the classiest room in town.

Fronted by Sade Adu alongside Stuart Matthewman, Andrew Hale and Paul S. Denman, the London band blended soul, jazz and pop at a moment when the charts were crowded with synths and big hair. Their debut, produced by Robin Millar, felt like a deliberate step away from the noise, built on restraint, space and a late-night glow that never once tries too hard.

Smooth Operator is the calling card, its slinky saxophone and noir storytelling making it one of the decade's most recognisable songs. Your Love Is King glides on a warm horn line and Adu's unhurried, smoky vocal, while Hang On to Your Love leans into a supple, funk-tinged groove that rewards a good pair of speakers. The band's take on Timmy Thomas's Why Can't We Live Together closes the record with hushed, simmering patience.

What still impresses is the economy of it all. Nothing is overplayed, every saxophone phrase and brushed rhythm has room to breathe, and Adu never pushes when a near-whisper will do the job better.

It is a debut that set the template for sophisticated soul, and a record that sounds exactly right on a turntable after dark.
