Rush's self-titled debut catches the band at its most stripped-down and bar-ready, and this limited 180 gram edition spreads its eight songs across two LPs.

Released in 1974, the album captures the original Toronto trio of Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and John Rutsey, making it the only Rush record without Neil Peart behind the kit. Before the concept suites and science-fiction epics, this was a hard-rock band raised on British blues-rock, playing loud, heavy riffs with a working-class swagger. When a Cleveland radio DJ put "Working Man" into heavy rotation, the song struck such a chord with local listeners that Rush soon landed a deal with Mercury.

"Finding My Way" kicks the door down with a fade-in guitar figure and Lee's piercing, high-register wail. "In the Mood" is a swaggering, good-time rocker built for the bar circuit, while "What You're Doing" grinds on a thick, bluesy riff. The closing "Working Man" is the centerpiece, a seven-minute slab of heavy rock with a punishing riff and a long instrumental stretch where Lifeson's guitar takes flight, a hint of the prog adventures to come.

For fans of the band's later grandeur, this is the raw blueprint, scrappy and full of attitude. It deserves to be played loud.
