Rush entered the 1990s with a gambler's grin on Roll The Bones, the 1991 album presented here as a Canadian import.
The trio's fourteenth studio album reunited Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart with producer Rupert Hine, who had helmed Presto two years earlier. Guitars moved back toward the centre of the mix after a decade of keyboard-heavy records, and Peart's lyrics wrestled with chance, fate and luck, a theme that ties the album together without ever feeling heavy-handed.
Dreamline opens with a surging, widescreen riff and became one of the most beloved songs of their later years. The title track famously drops a playful rap section into a funky, groove-driven arrangement, while Ghost Of A Chance features one of Lifeson's most soulful solos. Bravado is a slow-burning standout, its lyric about pressing on regardless treasured by fans.
Lee's bass is crisp and melodic, Lifeson's playing is bright and textured, and Peart's drumming is as precise and inventive as ever. The songs are tighter and more direct than their 1970s epics, but no less ambitious.
A fan favourite that kicked off a new decade for the band, Roll The Bones rewards anyone who assumes Rush peaked in the 1970s, and it still sounds bright and punchy today.
