Hard rock and progressive ambition collide on A Farewell to Kings, the 1977 album where Rush started stretching out in every direction at once.

Following the breakthrough of 2112, the Canadian trio decamped to Rockfield Studios in Wales with co-producer Terry Brown and began widening their palette. Synthesizers, classical guitar and tuned percussion crept into the arrangements, and Neil Peart's lyrics reached further into fantasy, literature and big philosophical questions. It set the template for the adventurous run of albums that followed, starting with Hemispheres, which picked up the Cygnus X-1 story a year later.

Closer to the Heart condenses the band's idealism into under three minutes and became one of their most beloved songs. Xanadu, inspired by Coleridge's Kubla Khan, unfolds over more than ten minutes of shimmering atmosphere and muscular riffing, while Cygnus X-1 Book I: The Voyage hurls the listener toward a black hole on a tide of Geddy Lee's piercing vocals and Alex Lifeson's razor-edged guitar. The title track sets the scene with delicate acoustic picking before the full band crashes in.

With just six tracks across two sides, every passage has room to unfold, and there is fresh detail to catch on each spin. For fans of seventies progressive rock, it remains one of Rush's essential statements.
