Viva! Roxy Music is the live document of a band that made art-school glamour sound dangerous, and this limited Italian import pressing puts it back on the turntable.
Released in 1976, just as the group was stepping away for a few years, the album gathers performances from Glasgow Apollo, Newcastle City Hall and Wembley Empire Pool recorded between 1973 and 1975. It works as an alternative greatest hits of the band's first era, with the studio polish stripped back and the stage volume turned up.
Bryan Ferry croons and snarls in equal measure, while Phil Manzanera's guitar slices against Andy Mackay's saxophone and Paul Thompson's thunderous drumming keeps it all anchored, with Eddie Jobson adding violin and keyboards to the mix. "Out of the Blue" opens the set with real urgency, "Both Ends Burning" races forward on nervous energy, and "In Every Dream Home a Heartache" builds its eerie tension into a full-band eruption. Closing with "Do the Strand" feels like the right kind of victory lap.
Plenty of live albums from the era sound like contractual obligations. This one sounds like a band that knew exactly how good it was, playing to crowds who agreed. For anyone who loves Country Life and Siren, it is the missing piece that shows how those records felt in a packed hall.
