Rod Stewart hit the jackpot with Every Picture Tells a Story, the ragged, rootsy 1971 album that made him a superstar on both sides of the Atlantic.
Recorded with friends from Faces, Ronnie Wood among them, it blends folk, blues, soul and rock with the easy, ramshackle charm of musicians having the time of their lives. Stewart was juggling a band career and a solo career at once, and this record proved his solo side could stand toe to toe with anything else rock had to offer that year.
Maggie May is the obvious crown jewel, a bittersweet story of a young man and an older lover, carried by acoustic guitar and that famous mandolin coda. It started life as a B-side before radio flipped the single over. The title track opens the album with a rowdy, half-acoustic gallop, Mandolin Wind brings a gentle, rustic warmth, and (I Know) I'm Losing You turns the Temptations hit into a full-throttle rock workout.
Both the album and Maggie May topped the charts in Britain and America at the same time, a rare double feat. Half a century later, the record still sounds warm, lived-in and gloriously human, the work of a singer whose rasp could make a pub singalong feel like a confession.
