Roberta Flack's long relationship with Lake Geneva comes into focus on The Montreux Years, a 180-gram double LP of live performances from the famous jazz festival.

Spanning her debut appearance in 1971 to her final visit in 2008, these previously unreleased recordings come from the festival's vast archive and have been restored and newly mastered by Tony Cousins at London's Metropolis Studios. Together they show how her quietly commanding style matured over nearly four decades without ever losing its poise.

The earliest shows are a revelation. Her 1972 reading of Leonard Cohen's Suzanne is unhurried and intimate, and To Love Somebody, from that 1971 debut, turns a Bee Gees song into something entirely her own. The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face and Killing Me Softly with His Song, both captured in 2005, prove that the songs that made her famous still carried enormous emotional weight decades on.

Between those bookends come selections from a 1990 set at the Casino and a 2008 return to the festival, all framed by the attentive Montreux crowds.

For a singer who made intimacy her signature, it is fitting that some of her most affecting moments happened on stage, and this set preserves them with real care, from the first hushed note to the final ovation.
