Robert Palmer made sharp tailoring and slinky grooves look effortless, and Collected follows that cool across two purple 180-gram LPs, a limited Dutch import in a gatefold jacket.
First compiled in 2016, the set traces Palmer from his early days fronting Vinegar Joe through his solo catalogue and his side trips with The Power Station and UB40. It is a reminder of how restless he was. Blue-eyed soul, New Orleans funk, reggae, new wave and glossy rock all passed through his hands, and he rarely sounded like a tourist.
The first disc covers the seventies and early eighties, opening with "Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley", the swampy title track of a debut he cut with help from The Meters. Then comes the cool synth pulse of "Johnny and Mary" and a string of soulful radio favourites.
The second disc is wall-to-wall hits. "Addicted to Love" and "Simply Irresistible" still sound like a dare, thumping drums and gleaming guitar, while later cuts reveal the crooner who was always lurking under the swagger. The Power Station and UB40 collaborations close the picture with a wink.
For anyone who only knows the videos, this is the fuller portrait of a singer with impeccable taste and a voice that could slide from silk to grit within a single chorus.
