Sixteen songs from the man who sold his soul at the crossroads, or so the legend goes: this UK import gathers the essential Robert Johnson on a single LP.
Johnson cut his entire recorded legacy in just two sets of sessions, in San Antonio in 1936 and Dallas in 1937, leaving behind 29 songs and a mystery that has never quite been solved. He died the following year at 27, almost unknown outside the Mississippi Delta juke joints where he played. Decades later, those recordings became scripture for the blues revival and for a generation of British guitarists who learned every note.
The playing still sounds uncanny. Cross Road Blues snaps with nervous energy, a single guitar doing the work of a whole band, and it later became a rock standard in the hands of Cream. Hellhound on My Trail is pure dread, his voice rising into a high, haunted cry over a shivering rhythm. Terraplane Blues turns a car into a sly double entendre, while Me and the Devil Blues is as chilling as anything the genre has produced.
These are rough, crackling recordings, and that is part of their power.
Put the needle down and hear where the blues, and much of rock and roll, began.
