Robert Earl Keen's Live From Austin, TX captures the Texas troubadour in his element, a 2001 Austin City Limits set spread across a gatefold double LP.

Few songwriters are as bound up with the Lone Star State's live music culture as Keen, a storyteller whose concerts have long been part celebration and part campfire singalong. This performance was taped for the long-running public television series in 2001 and released by New West in 2004, catching his band at their most locked-in and his songwriting at a confident peak, with seventeen songs that move easily between rowdy and reflective.

The Road Goes On Forever, his outlaw ballad of Sonny and Sherry, is the centerpiece, a slow-building tale that unfolds like a dusty border-town movie. Merry Christmas From the Family delivers his hilarious, cringe-inducing holiday portrait with perfect comic timing. Feelin' Good Again brings a lump-in-the-throat warmth to the second half, and a cover of Johnny Cash's I Still Miss Someone shows his gentler, more traditional side.
