Rise Against hit their stride on The Sufferer & the Witness, a 2006 album of melodic hardcore fire with choruses built for packed rooms.
The Chicago band's fourth album was recorded at The Blasting Room in Fort Collins, Colorado, with producers Bill Stevenson, the Descendents drummer, and his longtime engineering partner Jason Livermore. It sharpened the urgency of their earlier records while making space for bigger melodies and a more open-hearted sound, without losing any of the speed or conviction that won them a devoted following.
Ready to Fall surges forward on Tim McIlrath's raw-throated delivery, while Prayer of the Refugee sets a tense, quiet verse against a chorus that explodes on cue. Injection keeps the pace frantic, and The Good Left Undone shows off the band's gift for heartfelt, anthemic punk that sounds just as good shouted as it does sung.
Political anger and personal reflection sit side by side throughout, and the songs balance velocity with hooks that stick around for days. The guitars are tight and bright, the rhythm section relentless, and McIlrath sounds like he means every single word.
It's the record that cemented Rise Against as one of punk's most vital bands, and two decades on it still sounds urgent.
