Chicago's Rise Against found their voice on Revolutions Per Minute, the 2003 second album that turned melodic hardcore into a rallying cry, back in stores on purple vinyl.
Written in between relentless tours across North America and Europe, the record was cut at the Blasting Room with Bill Stevenson and Jason Livermore, the production team behind some of punk's most punishing and precise records. The result balances blistering speed with sharp, accessible melodies, and it became the bridge between the band's underground hardcore roots and the arena-sized rock they would go on to play.
Tim McIlrath's voice is the engine, switching from a soaring melodic cry to a raw-throated scream in the space of a bar. "Black Masks & Gasoline" opens the album at full throttle, "Heaven Knows" pairs a fist-pumping chorus with socially conscious lyrics, and "Like the Angel" became an instant fan favourite. "Blood-Red, White & Blue" points the anger squarely at the state of the nation, as pointed now as it was then.
For many fans this remains the band's definitive underground release, even after everything that came later, the moment the fire and the hooks fused perfectly. The purple pressing makes a striking, fitting home for a record that never stopped sounding urgent.
