Rilo Kiley's Take Offs and Landings stretches across two LPs, the 2001 debut where Jenny Lewis and Blake Sennett first turned heartbreak into hummable indie pop.
Both former child actors, Lewis and Sennett formed the band in Los Angeles and found a home on Barsuk, where this first album introduced their mix of jangly guitars, alt-country twang and lyrics that were funny, sad and painfully honest, often in the same line. It laid the groundwork for The Execution of All Things and More Adventurous, but it has a scrappy, wide-eyed charm all its own.
Go Ahead starts with a breezy, sunlit melody that hides a sting in its tail, while Science Vs. Romance wraps swirling guitars around one of the band's most enduring early songs. Pictures of Success is a bittersweet daydream about ambition and doubt, and Plane Crash in C builds slowly into a dreamy, melancholic swell.
Lewis's voice is the heart of it all, warm and conversational, while Sennett's guitar work adds a gentle shimmer. Short variations on earlier themes thread the record together like scenes in a film.
Plenty of listeners found the band through its later records, but this is where the story begins. Spread over four sides, it invites a slow, attentive listen.
