Rick Wakeman heads back to Mars on Return To The Red Planet, the sequel to his 2020 prog suite, pressed here as a UK import on two clear 140-gram LPs.
The Red Planet marked the keyboard wizard's full-blooded return to progressive rock, and he has said that new data and photographs from Mars convinced him another album was waiting to be written. This 2026 follow-up draws on fresh research and mission reports, sketching ancient lakes, canyon systems, dust storms and geological epochs in sound. It was recorded with the whole band playing together in the room, then mixed with producer and engineer Erik Jordan.
The English Rock Ensemble line-up features bassist Lee Pomeroy, guitarist Dave Colquhoun, drummer Adam Falkner and vocalist Mollie Marriott. The Jezero Crater opens the album, named for the ancient Martian lake bed, while Bowie's Vision is a personal homage to David Bowie, whose most famous Martian song featured Wakeman's piano. Noctis Labyrinthus heads into the planet's maze of canyons, and the near eight-minute The Epochs Of Mars closes the set.
Expect plenty of Wakeman's keyboard firepower and lots of interplay with the band, the kind of widescreen prog that made his name.
For fans who have followed him from Yes onward, this is a richly detailed second trip into the cosmos.
