REO Speedwagon bring their arena-sized harmonies to the holidays on Not So Silent Night: Christmas With REO Speedwagon, a festive set built for singing along.
First released in 2009, the album found Kevin Cronin and company stepping away from power ballads to take on seasonal favourites, approaching them the way they approach everything: big guitars, warm vocal blends and an easy grin. The title says plenty, as this is a Christmas record that prefers a living room full of people, plus a few cousins on harmony, to candlelit hush. Cronin's voice, still bright and unmistakable, carries the whole thing with ease.
John Lennon's "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" gets a heartfelt, anthemic reading, and the spiritual "Children Go Where I Send Thee" becomes a rousing, foot-tapping highlight. "Little Drummer Boy" builds steadily on its insistent beat, while "Blue Christmas" leans into a bluesy, late-night swagger that suits the band's Midwestern roots.
Familiar hymns sit alongside lighter seasonal staples, and the band clearly had fun mixing reverence with rock and roll, never letting either side crowd out the other for a moment.
For fans who still spin Hi Infidelity at every family gathering, this makes a natural December companion, comfortable, a little loud and full of heart, just like the band.
