Feel Your Feelings Fool! is The Regrettes' debut, fifteen tracks of vintage punk snarl written by teenagers who'd already been in bands for years by the time they got here, now on pink and blue marble vinyl.
Lydia Night started performing at seven and had already played South by Southwest as the youngest act on the bill with an earlier project before she met Genessa Gariano at Los Angeles' School of Rock program and formed the Regrettes in 2015. This 2017 debut, released while Night was still a teenager, fuses retro doo-wop and new wave sensibility with genuine punk attitude, a combination that reads as throwback on paper but never once feels like costume, mostly because the songwriting is sharp enough to earn the reference points rather than just borrow them.
A Living Human Girl carries the record's clearest thesis, teenage identity treated as something worth taking seriously rather than mocking. Seashore leans into the band's retro girl-group harmonies with real charm. Hey Now delivers the album's most direct punk energy, and How Do You Love? closes things on a note more searching than the rest of the record, foreshadowing where they'd eventually take the sound.
A debut this assured from a band this young rarely happens by accident. Lydia Night had been building toward it since she was in elementary school.
