Redd Kross's Neurotica gets the deluxe treatment on colored vinyl, a 2LP edition pairing the 1987 power pop landmark with a full disc of demos.
Brothers Jeff and Steven McDonald had been playing punk since they were kids in Los Angeles, but Neurotica is where their love of glam, bubblegum and pop culture fully clicked. Produced by former Ramones drummer Tommy Erdelyi and released on Big Time Records, it's a sugar rush of fuzzed-out riffs and sticky hooks.
The title track kicks the door in, "Peach Kelli Pop" is a candy-coloured singalong, and "Play My Song" bounces along with irresistible charm. "McKenzie," a nod to actress Mackenzie Phillips, shows how the band turned their obsession with TV and teen idols into great songs.
Behind the giddy surface, the playing is tight and muscular, which helps explain why the record became a touchstone for the grunge and alternative bands that followed. It sounds both trashy and brilliantly crafted, often within the same chorus.
The demos offer a fascinating look at these songs in their early, scrappier forms. With a gatefold sleeve and a download card included, this edition is an ideal way into a cult classic, and a welcome upgrade for fans who have worn out their old copies.
