Red Hot Chili Peppers' Greatest Hits squeezes a wild, sun-bleached run of singles into one handy double LP.
First released in 2003, the collection spans the band's run from funk-punk party starters to stadium-sized songwriters. It reaches back to a punchy 1989 Stevie Wonder cover, then sweeps through the Blood Sugar Sex Magik breakthrough, the Californication comeback and the melodic heights of By the Way. Two new songs recorded for the set round things out, proving the band still had fresh ideas while looking back.
The highlights come thick and fast. "Under the Bridge" remains Anthony Kiedis' most vulnerable moment, a lonely love letter to Los Angeles carried by John Frusciante's delicate guitar. "Give It Away" is the opposite, a funk explosion built around Flea's restless bass and Kiedis' rapid-fire chant. "Scar Tissue" glides on a languid slide guitar line and a weary, hopeful melody, and the newly recorded "Fortune Faded" shows a band still hungry, all driving rhythm and urgent hooks.
