Red Hot Chili Peppers swapped some of the funk for sunlit melody on By the Way, a 2002 album spread across a 2LP set that gives its sixteen songs room to breathe.

Coming off the comeback success of Californication, the band reunited with producer Rick Rubin and let John Frusciante steer much of the sound. His stacked backing harmonies and love of sixties pop and new wave push the record into lush, layered territory, with Anthony Kiedis singing far more than he raps and Flea often playing in service of the song rather than the spotlight.

The title track "By the Way" is the bridge between old and new, flipping between a dreamy, melodic hook and a frantic, rapid-fire verse. "Can't Stop" rides one of Frusciante's most nimble, choppy riffs, while "The Zephyr Song" drifts by on warm, breezy harmonies and a gentle groove.

"Universally Speaking" leans into bittersweet, radio-ready pop, and across the deeper cuts the band explores textures they had barely hinted at before, from soft acoustic moments to swooning ballads that would have sounded unthinkable on their earlier, rowdier records.

It is the sound of a band growing up without growing dull, and for many fans it remains the most beautiful record in their catalogue.
