Sunny without being lightweight, Rebelution's Bright Side of Life is the 2009 album that helped turn a California college band into a reggae-rock headliner.
Formed in Isla Vista near Santa Barbara, the group built a devoted following on the road before this second album widened their reach considerably. Singer and guitarist Eric Rachmany writes with an easy optimism that never tips into naivety, and the band's roots reggae grooves are laced with rock guitar, dub effects and a touch of R&B smoothness. It's music made for open air, warm evenings and good company.
The title track sets out the philosophy in its opening minutes, all positive vibes and a laid-back bounce. "Outta Control" keeps the mood buoyant, while "Lazy Afternoon" lives up to its name with a hazy, unhurried sway. "Change the System" revisits a song from their 2006 EP, giving its call for social change a fuller, more confident sound, and "Moonlight" helps round out a set that barely lets the mood dip.
These songs still sound tailor-made for festival fields and backyard speakers alike. On vinyl, Bright Side of Life feels like a long summer afternoon that refuses to end, with the sun still high and nowhere you need to be.
