How Love Bends finds Reb Fountain pushing her noir folk-punk further into open emotional territory, eleven tracks packaged here with a bonus 7-inch.
San Francisco-born but long settled in Aotearoa New Zealand, Fountain spent years as a working jazz vocalist and released two overlooked early albums before her 2020 self-titled record on Flying Nun won the Taite Music Prize and finally announced her as one of the country's most distinctive voices, that trademark blend of gothic folk atmosphere and genuine pop instinct fully realised. This 2025 record, produced with longtime collaborator Dave Khan alongside Simon Gooding, keeps her core band intact, Khan on guitar and keys, Karin Canzek on bass, Earl Robertson on drums, and leans into the poetic depth that's defined her whole recent run.
The title track carries the record's central image directly, love treated as something that warps rather than breaks. He Commands You to Jump Into the Sea is the album's strangest, most vivid piece of writing, biblical and unsettling in equal measure. Memorial closes the record at over six minutes, the clear emotional summit of the whole album, patient and genuinely devastating.
An artist who disappeared from music for over a decade before finally getting the recognition this kind of writing always deserved. How Love Bends keeps building on exactly that momentum.
