Ray Charles never cared much for genre borders, and Best Of Country & Western gathers the songs where he made country music unmistakably his own. This 2024 collection draws on more than two decades of recordings.
In 1962 Charles took a huge gamble by cutting an album of country and western standards, and Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music became one of the biggest records of his career. He kept returning to that well for years afterwards, and this set runs from those early-sixties landmarks to Seven Spanish Angels, his 1984 duet with Willie Nelson that went to number one on the country chart.
I Can't Stop Loving You remains the centrepiece, its lush strings and choir framing a pleading, unforgettable vocal. You Don't Know Me is all tender restraint, and Your Cheatin' Heart turns Hank Williams' lament into something closer to a soul ballad. Elsewhere he rebuilds familiar country tunes with big-band swing, sweeping orchestrations and a crooner's patience, showing how freely he could reshape a song without losing its heart.
Every track carries the same trick: country songwriting, rhythm and blues feeling, and a voice that makes heartbreak sound like church.
For anyone who thinks they know where country ends and soul begins, this is a joyful reminder that Ray Charles never saw the line.
