Rancid kicked down the door in 1993 with this self-titled debut, back as an anniversary edition on white vinyl splattered with black.

Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman had already lived through Operation Ivy, and with drummer Brett Reed they turned that East Bay grit into a leaner, angrier trio signed to Epitaph. Lars Frederiksen had not yet joined, so this is the band at its most stripped back, recorded at Westbeach Recorders and tearing through its songs in a little over half an hour.

"Adina" opens the album in a blur, with Freeman's gruff bark trading off against Armstrong's slurred snarl. "Hyena" and "Rats in the Hallway" capture the band's knack for gutter-level storytelling set to breakneck hooks, while "Unwritten Rules" shows off the thundering, melodic bass lines that made Freeman a legend among punk players.

There is no polish here, and frankly none is needed at all. The guitars are raw, the drums barely stay on the rails, and every chorus sounds like it was built to be shouted back at a sweaty basement show.

Before the ska-punk anthems and festival stages, there was this, the blueprint for everything Rancid would become, and this splatter pressing makes it look as scrappy as it sounds.
