Most of the twenty songs here are over in about two minutes, so the Ramones' Greatest Hits moves at the band's own breakneck pace, now pressed on clear vinyl.

First compiled in 2006, the set runs from their 1976 debut through to the late 1980s, tracing the years when four guys from Forest Hills, Queens, stripped rock down to the bones and handed punk its blueprint. The sequencing is roughly chronological, so you hear the sound sharpen and widen as it goes.

"Blitzkrieg Bop" kicks things off with that stadium-sized chant, "Sheena Is A Punk Rocker" and "Rockaway Beach" show off the band's surf-pop sweet tooth, and "I Wanna Be Sedated" remains the perfect two-and-a-half-minute tantrum.

Later cuts show how far the formula could stretch, from a Phil Spector-produced cover that wraps Joey's croon in strings to the title song they wrote for a Stephen King film. Through it all, the buzzsaw guitars and Dee Dee's count-ins keep everything moving at full tilt, with barely a breath between songs.

Clear vinyl suits a band that never hid behind fancy production, and this is about the quickest route into why they still matter to anyone who has ever picked up a guitar and kept it simple.
