Radiohead's A Moon Shaped Pool is the band's most quietly devastating record, here on double vinyl that gives its strings and silences plenty of room.
Released in 2016, their ninth studio album was produced by longtime collaborator Nigel Godrich and recorded largely to analogue tape across Oxfordshire, London and a converted mill studio in Provence. Several songs had been kicking around for years, and the album gathers them into something mournful yet strangely warm, with lyrics that brush against climate dread and heartbreak.
Jonny Greenwood's arrangements for the London Contemporary Orchestra are the record's secret weapon. On "Burn the Witch" the players strike their strings with guitar picks, creating a jittery, percussive menace, while "Daydreaming" floats in slow motion before detuned cellos growl beneath it. "Identikit" finally gives a song the band had played live a proper studio home, and "True Love Waits", a fan favourite for two decades, closes the album as a spare, aching piano ballad.
The tracklist runs in alphabetical order, a small, deliberate detail that somehow makes the songs feel like separate rooms in the same house.
Fans who treasure Kid A and In Rainbows will find this one rewards patience. It is a gorgeous, low-lit listen best saved for late evenings.
