Racing Mount Pleasant's Grip Your Fist, I'm Heaven Bound returns on white vinyl, giving the Michigan band's sprawling 2022 debut a second life under their new name.
The seven-piece came together as Kingfisher at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 2019, and released this album under that banner. In 2025 they became Racing Mount Pleasant and followed up with a self-titled record, which sent plenty of new listeners digging back to where it all started. This reissue makes the dig a lot easier.
The ten songs blend folk, chamber pop and post-rock, with strings and horns swelling around textured, heartfelt vocals. Across "Annie", "Reichenbach Falls", "Talus (Song for John)" and "Holy Hell", the band lets quiet passages gather weight before tipping into release, pulling the emotional threads tighter as the record unfolds. There is a heartland streak running through it as well, the kind of wide-sky Americana that feels rooted in the Midwest.
It is ambitious music made by a young band with a lot of people on stage and a lot to say, and the sequencing rewards a full sitting rather than a skim.
For anyone who caught Racing Mount Pleasant's recent rise, this is the origin story worth owning.
