The Black Sessions Revealed captures R.E.M. live in Paris in 2001, a previously unreleased radio set from the Reveal era, coming as a limited edition 2LP.

Reveal, the band's 12th studio album, was produced by Pat McCarthy and arrived in 2001 as their second record since drummer Bill Berry's departure. Unlike most R.E.M. albums, it wasn't followed by a conventional tour, which makes this 17-song performance for Radio France a rare live document of those songs. Michael Stipe, Peter Buck and Mike Mills are joined by Scott McCaughey, Ken Stringfellow and Joey Waronker, and the set lands as a companion to the album's 25th anniversary reissue.

The Reveal material gets real room to breathe. "Imitation of Life" and "The Lifting" lead the way, the extra players filling out the arrangements with warmth and detail, and many of these songs were rarely played live at all. Then the career staples arrive, from "Daysleeper" to "Losing My Religion", with Stipe in fine, unhurried voice and the band sounding relaxed in the intimate radio setting.

For anyone who has worn out their copy of Reveal, it adds a warm and welcome footnote to a sometimes overlooked chapter of the band's story. Hearing these songs in a room, without studio gloss, makes a strong case for that era.
